Walmart Tells Manning it will Reverse Course, Restore Patient Access to Medication

Greensboro, NC – Today, in response to Congresswoman Kathy Manning’s (NC-06)letter calling on Walmart to rescind their discriminatory policy restricting and refusing access to the medication misoprostol, Walmart informed Congresswoman Manning that Walmart pharmacies in North Carolina are rescinding this policy.

“The women and girls of North Carolina have the right to obtain the prescription medication their doctors prescribe without unnecessary restrictions placed on them by Walmart. Following my call to Walmart, demanding that Walmart rescind its harmful policy denying women access to medication used to treat miscarriages, Walmart changed its policy and will now fill these prescriptions as they should in accordance with the law. I am delighted women's right to access this necessary medication has been restored in our state’s Walmart pharmacies,” said Congresswoman Kathy Manning. “The reversal of this misguided policy is a victory for the health and fundamental rights of the women and girls of North Carolina. We will not allow corporations or radical politicians to interfere with the health care of patients. I will always fight to protect the health and freedoms of North Carolinians.”

On October 5th, 2022, Rep. Manning led her fellow North Carolina Democratic Members of Congress in calling on Walmart to resume dispensing misoprostol and provide further clarification for the justification of this policy.

Following this letter, news reports, and guidance from North Carolina Board of Pharmacy, Walmart rescinded their policy. On October 7th, Walmart sent a memo to their North Carolina pharmacists indicating that they must immediately resume dispensing misoprostol without the previously mandated restrictions.
