Led by Reps. Manning and Deutch, House Passes $1 Billion to Replenish Iron Dome Missile Defense System

September 23, 2021

Washington, D.C. – Today the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 5323, the Iron Dome Supplemental Appropriations Act, with a vote of 420-9. This bill appropriates $1 billion to replenish the Iron Dome missile defense system. In May, Hamas fired over 4,500 rockets at Israel, and Iron Dome intercepted 90% of them, saving Israeli and Palestinian lives. Following those attacks, funding is required to replenish Iron Dome to ensure that the defense system is prepared to intercept future rocket attacks.

Following the vote, Congresswoman Manning stated:

“Today, Congress passed critical funding for the Iron Dome missile defense system with the bipartisan support of more than ninety-five percent of House members. This vote sends the unequivocal message that the United States will always stand by its ally Israel to ensure the safety and security of civilians. I urge my Senate colleagues to pass this bill immediately to ensure Israel has the resources it needs to defend against future terrorist attacks.”

Today’s standalone vote on replenishment of Iron Dome stemmed from the leadership of Congresswoman Kathy Manning and Congressman Ted Deutch, vice-chair and chair respectively of the Middle East, North Africa, and Global Counterterrorism Subcommittee of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Representatives Manning and Deutch were joined by Reps. Wasserman Schultz, Schneider, Luria, Gottheimer, Philips and others in negotiations with House Leadership to get a standalone vote on Iron Dome replenishment on the House floor this week.

The Iron Dome is a critically important missile defense system used by Israel, one of our closest allies, to save civilian lives from terrorist attacks. I am grateful to Majority Leader Hoyer and Chairwoman DeLauro for their leadership in bringing this supplemental to the Floor today,” said Congresswoman Manning.

Prior to the vote on final passage of H.R. 5323, Congresswoman Manning spoke on the House floor to urge her colleagues support for the bill. Watch her remarks here.
