Manning Tours GTCC Advanced Manufacturing Facilities

February 19, 2021

North Carolina Congresswoman Kathy Manning visited Guilford Technical Community College Wednesday to get a close look at the college’s advanced manufacturing program and learn about opportunities to expand the college’s programs to meet the needs of the community and industry.

Manning, who was sworn into office in January, serves on the Education and Labor Committee and is focused on workforce development.

“The Triad has a rich history in manufacturing. I’m pleased to tour the advanced manufacturing campus at Guilford Technical Community College to learn more about the development of the next generation of the skilled workforce here in the Sixth District,” said Rep. Manning. “As Congress deliberates the next COVID-19 package, I will remain a strong advocate for additional funding to help schools reopen safely and to increase access and affordability for students.”

Manning toured the GTCC Center for Advanced Manufacturing with George Ragsdale, GTCC Board of Trustees chair, Kip Blakely, GTCC board member, Dr. Anthony Clarke, GTCC president, Dr. Beth Pitonzo, GTCC senior vice president of instruction and Dr. Manuel Dudley, GTCC vice president of workforce and continuing education. During the tour the group met with key faculty and staff members.

“We were excited that representative Manning would take the time to visit with us and see some of the amazing things GTCC is doing train our workforce for high-wage careers,” said Clarke. “We look forward to working with her to grow our current programs to meet the demand for economic development and industry job growth.”

GTCC has identified four areas – transportation/logistics, aviation, advanced manufacturing, and healthcare – where industry demand far exceeds the supply of trained workers. The college currently offers advanced training in all four areas that could be expanded to support that need if funding were available.
